Flares and EPIRBS

You will need to carry an inshore flare kit (2 red hand-held and 2 orange smoke) if you are operating outside "Smooth Waters". In Moreton Bay that means pretty much the whole bay north of Peel Island, except in the sheltered passages and creeks! See the MSQ Map below to check out where "Smooth Waters" ends.
Even if you don't plan to go outside "Smooth Water" you should carry flares just to keep you safe. Marine Rescue Bribie has rescued many people insmooth water who have let off a flare only a few hundred metres from shore.
You will need to carry an EPIRB if you are operating outside "Partially Smooth" waters. In Moreton Bay that means pretty much anywhere that is not in the shelter of the islands! See the MSQ Map below to check out where an EPIRB is required.
Even if you don't plan to go outside partially smooth waters you should carry an EPRB as it is the fastest way to get emergency help when things go bad in Moreton Bay! Check out AMSA's information site below:
